Overview

The Exhibit, Painters of the Wasatch Mountains, sponsored by the Thomas H. & Lynn Fey Family Foundation, KSL 5 TV, Zion’s Bank, the George S. & Dolores Dore Eccles Foundation, Summit County RAP Tax Grant, and the Utah Division of Arts & Museums, is a distinct painting development with regard to the American West's Wasatch Range which emerged in the nineteenth century and persists even today. These “painters of the Wasatch” have set many precedents through their artistic interpretations of this mountain subject matter. The retrospective exhibit, drawn from the 2005 collector’s book “Painters of the Wasatch Mountains” and produced in a collaboration with the Utah Museum of Art and History, is a survey of the gamut of painters who formed and have carried forward an expression of nature's mighty gift to both visitors and residents of Utah. To highlight this exhibition, the Kimball Art Center announces the "My Utah, My Landscape" Painting Contest open to all K – 12 students in the state. This competition was created to highlight the importance of painting the Utah landscape, its beautiful geography and unique history!

To heighten the public’s engagement in the exhibition, the Kimball Art Center created “My Utah, My Landscape” Photography Contest, October 15, 2013 though November 17, 2013. The contest is open to Utah Students grades K – 12. Eligible students may upload one photograph or scanned image of an original landscape painting of an area in Utah to Kimball Art Center’s online painting gallery to be judged by professional artist. This competition hopes to inspire students and educate them about the importance of painting Utah’s landscape from the late nineteenth century to present day. This contest is made possible by thanks to generous funding from Utah Division of Arts and Museums Art Education Project Grant. The “My Utah, My Landscape” Photography Contest will close on Sunday, November 17, 2013. Thirteen of the submitted paintings will be juried by an artist and the selected images will be turned into a free, downloadable 2013-2014 calendar. All images submitted will also be placed for viewing, with the top 13 recognized, on our community wall for all to see.
