Kimball Clay Studio

Welcome to our NEW ceramics studio! As a community studio, we offer the opportunity to play, learn and create in a friendly atmosphere. Kimball Clay Studio is staffed by experienced, professional teachers, each with their own style, who offer hands-on assistance and inspiration while you create your ceramic pieces. We also offer a variety of classes for all ages and abilities. Join us for a lesson or a studio session and experience the artistic process of clay!

      • We fire from cone 04 (low-fire) to cone 10 (high-fire) and all glaze temperatures in between. We are working on growing our firing types to include wood and soda.

Studio Membership

Studio members pay a small monthly fee to have access to the studio during art center hours and rotating evenings.  

We offer our members:

  • Work storage shelf 24" x 28"
  • Personal storage shelf 14" x 15"

Studio Membership - $40/mo. or $300/yr.  (no tax deductions)

All of the special membership privileges and use of all Kimball Studios (ceramics, drawing, and painting) during museum hours. Studio members must provide their own materials, but have access to equipment in studios. All scheduled classes and A.R.T.S. school tours take precedence in studio spaces. Membership can be purchased month-to-month.

Monthly Student Studio Membership, $30.00

(17+, high school or university student ID required at time of purchase).

Monthly Teen & Tween Kimball Clay Membership, $25.00

(For ages 11 – 16, adult supervision required). BECOME A MEMBER Studio materials and firing cost is included in clay purchase price.

Friday Open Studios

  • $10 for non-members (free for members)
  • No pre-registration necessary, drop-ins welcome!

The NEW Kimball Clay ceramics studio welcomes you to join our new guided open studio sessions that will take place every Friday afternoon from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. this fall. Come check out the newly built studio at 1401 Kearns Blvd., and meet our Kimball Clay community! Experienced teaching staff are present for any clay handbuilding or wheel throwing projects you want to conquer! Come on in and spend your Friday afternoons in the studio! Space is limited to 8 open studio participants in the studio at one time.*

*Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult, one-on-one adult supervision required. If you are interested in spending more time in the studio, please inquire about our studio membership.


Meet the Instructors

Kristen McDermaid - Ceramics Studio Manager

Kristen has worked with clay for the past 18 years. She received her B.F.A. in ceramics from the University of Utah in 2007. She studied Ceramics at Konkuk University in Seoul, South Korea in 2005. Kristen completed a Ceramics Studio Assistant position at Peter's Valley School of Craft in 2007 and returned to Peter's Valley as an Artist in Residence in 2008. She also taught for the Salt Lake City School District’s Community Education Department from 1996 – 2013 in K-12 grades. Kristen completed her Masters of Fine Arts in ceramics in 2015 from the University of Utah. She sells and shows her work nationally. Kristen teaches all age groups at the Kimball Clay Studio.

Cameron Chaffee - Ceramics Studio Technician

Cameron has been working in ceramics for 2 years. His focus is kids and family classes. Cameron sells his work at local markets in Park City.

Juanita Marshall

Juanita has over 15 years of experience working with ceramics from the University of Utah and has taught in the Park City and Salt Lake City community for the past 5 years. Juanita has a studio in Salt Lake City and sells and shows her work in Park City and Salt Lake City galleries.

Maxx Cohen

Maxx has experience from the Taos Clay Studio in New Mexico. His primarily wheel thrown forms that are carved and hand altered. Maxx teaches classes to all age groups at the Kimball Clay Studio. He sells his work at local markets and shops.
