Kimball Art Center | Young Artists' Academy | Maggie Avila

Art. Art is a big factor in everyone’s lives. It is a lifeline for me. Without art I would be a wreck! I use art to express my emotions. Art has been used like that not by just me, but by people all over the world since the Neanderthals. I love art! It all goes from hand prints to computer graphics. No one person draws the same way. Everyone has his or her own inspiration. There may be two stick people drawn by two people, but each has its own meaning. One may be the loss of a brother and the other may be the coming of a new boy. You never know. Art always leaves you guessing. Artists may have meant one thing while they were painting and then their meaning completely changed while they were painting. Then viewers in a museum or art show may think that the painting means a whole different thing. In other words art is perceived in millions of ways.

A lot of people are stunned by what I do, not because it is fantastic. It’s usually because it is happily morbid. I don’t do things with dead babies or anything, but I take a lot of things apart and create something new. When I get bored my imagination takes over! Once on a three-day weekend I didn’t have anything to do so I went up into the attic. I found my old boxes of baby dolls, dinosaurs and horses. Oh boy, I destroyed everything in them because I had an artistic drive to change them. I changed them all right. Now there are horses with dinosaur heads, snake tails and bows. They are a lot of fun. I had some people asking if I sold them! I have a very artistic mind. I also like to spray-paint and paint with stencils that I have made.

This last year was my first year at the Young Artists’ Academy and I love it. I want to participate in it until I graduate. I love the laid back mentality and how I am friends with everyone there. I would love to do another project this year like the chairs. It was supposed to be lovely short little project. NOT! Even though they took up almost the whole year it was still a lot of fun. Hopefully it will pay off.

I’m sure that I have much improvement to go. I hope that in this art class I will be able to get more help, advice and knowledge. My ultimate goal when I grow up is to own a line of stores that sell clothing and contemporary crafts that I make. I would love to make money off of things that I create. I was at first inspired by Andy Warhol but then I realized that that would be square. The only thing that I liked about his art I realized was all the color. I still haven’t found an artist that would describe my inspiration. I do know that my friends inspire me. All of my art usually has one thing or another that has ties to one of my friends. Every single piece that I have depicts an event or idea that I have experienced. I love my friends so much it is hard to keep them out of my creations.
