Kimball Art Center | Young Artists' Academy | Ali Mitchell

I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember. It was a skill I’ve had since first grade, so naturally I just stuck with it. For years it was just a skill, but around 5th grade I really starting focusing on drawing. I bought a “How to Draw” book and practiced every day. My love for art grew from that, so I was really just born with the interest and happened to take my skills father.

I have always liked art, but I haven’t thought of it as a career as much as a hobby until recently. For a while I wanted to be a doctor, but I always struggled with how much I wanted to be a professional artist. Eventually, I just set my priorities straight and realized what I really wanted in my life. As of last summer I’ve been looking at art schools and thinking of all the glorious things I could give to the world with my art.

I look forward to Thursday all week, it’s my favorite time because I get to hang out at the Kimball and experience the creative world more than I ever have before. It’s a place I really like to be, because the most important thing is art. It lets me focus on things that I might have passed over to do homework, so I’m really grateful for that time. Not only that, but I’ve made a lot of new friends that are really tubular people. I would have never met them if I hadn’t gone to YAA, and I look forward to all the crazy things they do.

I have many art goals for the future. Some are just around the corner, like winning a portrait competition and getting an A in art class, but I also have big long-term goals. I definitely plan to go to a great art school, get a degree and a job working at Marvel or a major animation company. Of course, selling my work in fabulous galleries where I will become revered for my masterpieces and the concepts I portray is a goal. After a long and spectacular career, I plan to take after my aunt and become a professor at an esteemed art college. Hopefully, they will be begging at my knees to join their staff. Very modest life plans I know. But, I’m confident I have the skill, talent and spunk to get me there.
