At its best photography shows truth to power. At its very least photography can show us scenes with detail we might not otherwise be able to see. Photography describes, narrates and evokes. The best photos do all these things at once. It’s a constant chase for these images that draws me to photography. The opportunity to capture the “decisive moment,” that Cartier-Bresson described, is fleeting. However, this challenge is what makes photography so fulfilling.

My experience in art comes in many forms. I have always enjoyed drawing, painting, building things and communicating through visual means. However, my decision to pursue photography came from my viewing of the work of some of the world’s best photographers. The ability of a photograph to confront stereotypes and falsehoods is what continues to draw me into the medium. While only fraction of a photographer’s work may break down barriers or challenge people’s thinking, this remains my end goal.

I am grateful for the opportunities that the Kimball Art Center affords me as a photographer, instructor and individual. Continual improvement is what I strive for in my work.
