Learn to create wooden sculptural mobiles with Peter Behn and learn about sculptures by Alexander Calder. Students view examples of several mobiles and discuss the basic rules of building on the first day of class. With provided materials, students build a simple mobile that balances, swings and is aesthetically pleasing. For the second session, students build mobiles using found objects brought from home to get comfortable with the mechanics of constructing mobiles, attachment methods and using your individual creative talents. Before the end of the evening, we will each design on paper a mobile reflecting the influences of Alexander Calder. During the final sessions, students will build the mobile they designed with paper in week two, using 1/8 inch plywood, scrap wood and wire. At the end of the class, students discuss each other’s work, looking for inspiration and planning future projects on their own. In addition to class studies, students will be given a list of websites for inspiration. Students are responsible for providing some of their own materials from home and a list will be given during the first class. Space is limited to six students.
