Teen & Tween (Ages 11 – 16 / Middle & High School)

Teen classes are for students who want to explore and excel in the arts. In each teen class, the instructor works with students to achieve more advanced projects. Students learn skills and techniques they can take with them after the class has ended. Teen classes are for students who are 11 - 16 years old. Note that 16 year olds are also welcome to register for select adult classes if they are prepared for a more advanced classroom setting.

Painting the Expressive Portrait

This class is meant for students 14+.


Students revisit and refine portraiture technique. Rather than exaggerate to the point of caricature, learn to accurately show and create dynamic expressions through oil paint, and how to use brushstrokes and a specific color palette to convey mood and enhance the expressive portrait.  This class will be taught from photo references and mirrors for self-portraiture.

Beyond the Pencil: Drawing Techniques for Teens

This class encourages students to explore drawing through a variety of materials, methods, and philosophies. Student will become familiar with drawing principles, and materials as they complete exercises and activities to help them see like an artist and set their vision realized on paper.  The goal is to gain confidence as they become acquainted with their own unique drawing style.

Wheel Throwing for Teens

 All skill levels welcome! Learn the tricks of success for making clay objects on the wheel. If you have never thrown before this is the best class for starting to figure out the basics of the potter’s wheel. Students are also welcome to practice their skills for improvement. We will start with cups and bowls for students to gain confidence on the wheel.  As students advance, they are welcome to create their own sculptural wheel thrown designs.

Teen Fall Break Art Camp

Teens have fun with Anna exploring painting and drawing in this 2 day art camp!  Students will enjoy Anna’s relaxed approach to strengthening their drawing skills, which ultimately translates into painting skills.  Weather permitting, students will walk to local parks to sketch en plein air (outside), allowing them to practice perspective, form, and proportions.  In the case of inclement weather, students will work from reference photos of their choosing.  Thursday’s focus will be drawing, Friday’s focus will be painting. Spaces fill fast - register in advance to reserve your space.

Intro to Pastels: Florals and Botanicals

Pastels are the perfect stepping stone from drawing to painting. It is dry media, so people who have never painted before find it accessible and the techniques resemble that of painting. Learn to paint with pastel while improving your observational skills and practicing color theory.  Students will work from photo references to explore the beauty of florals and botanicals in pastel.

Stitch It Up: Embroidered Jewelry Workshop

This class is meant for teens 14+.


Have fun with Lindsay and learn the art of embroidery on fabric while making some awesome wearable art.  Students come up with their own miniature designs, whether it be a phrase, an animal, an object, or an emoji.  Lindsay will have kits prepared for each student to display the embroidered art as a pendant on a necklace.  Come stitch it up and accessorize creatively!

With subject matter varying from representational to free form, this class is designed to encourage confidence and creative expression through paint.

The Scientific Illustration

This class is meant for teens 14+.


Stippling is a technique using many small dots to create naturalistic gradation of tones, which is portrayed in scientific illustration.  Learn how to use line and stippling techniques to suggest and render form, create texture, and build a dynamic, clean image using pen and ink. Class will examine specimens like animal skulls, or taxidermied animals. On the first day of class, students will receive a drawing pad and a personal pack of Micron pens of varied thicknesses to achieve the perfect values when drawing.

Painting Pet Portraits

This class is meant for teens 14+.


Working in the students’ choice of paint medium (oil, acrylic, or watercolor), Annette will teach students how to successfully paint a pet portrait. Students will learn how to break down the figure of a pet or animal into basic shapes to help accurately depict the subject. Using photographic references, learn how to simplify the subject's form, which is a valuable skill in drawing/painting and can be applied to still lifes and the human figure. Students will learn portrait and painting techniques to capture the likeness of animals, and become more comfortable with their favored paint medium, discovering new skills in painting and drawing. Students should come to class with photographic references of the pet or animal they would like to paint.

In this class, students will work with Emily to discover various methods of drawing. This class will be an exploration of drawing materials. Students will be given the opportunity to experiment with different colored paper, charcoal, graphite, powdered graphite/charcoal, white charcoal, pastel pencils and liquefied graphite and charcoal. Students may bring in images they wish to work with or a still life will be set up for each class.

Fused Glass Christmas Ornaments

This class is meant for teens/tweens 12+.


Have you ever wanted to create one-of- a-kind Christmas ornaments or gifts? We will be creating unique ornaments from fused glass using provided patterns or your own ideas to decorate your tree or give to friends and family. The class will also cover the basic tenets of glass fusion and is suitable for ages 12 and older.  This class is for beginners, but experienced students can join in as well.

Illustrating the Human Skeleton

This class is meant for teens 14+.


This class focuses on the human skeleton, offering an anatomy based approach to capturing the human figure. Working from the skeleton helps anyone interested in drawing have a deeper understanding of form, learning to indicate form through minimal use of line and shading. Working from a human skeleton model, students will work with pencil and Micron pens in various sizes to achieve perfect balance in value and contrast while drawing the human skeleton. This is a valuable workshop that will strengthen anyone’s skills in drawing.
