Kids (Ages 6 – 10 / Elementary School)

Kids' classes are offered for children between the ages of 6 to 10. Get creative in the Kimball Art Center studios with classes ranging from painting and drawing to pottery and mixed media. Students learn new techniques in each class and most classes have no prerequisites. Note that some kids classes may be open to 11 and 12 year olds.

Fall Creations for Kids

Kids explore the autumn season through art in this class.  Emily will lead students in art lessons in drawing, painting, and printmaking while experimenting with fall colors, shapes, and textures.

Glass Mosaic Picture Frames for Kids

Get creative with glass mosaics!  Students will use sketching, transferring, and designing techniques to create an abstract schematic arrangement on a 4x6 picture frame.  Stacey will lead students in step-by-step glass mosaic procedures to help students produce a unique picture frame that they will love!

Wheel Throwing for Kids II

*This class is recommended for students who are 7 and older.  6 year olds who have wheel throwing experience may also register.


Learn how to create wheel thrown pottery in this class.  After a demonstration on the first day, students will work on the wheel to perfect their techniques and create wheel thrown forms!  Students must have previous experience in handbuilding with clay.  Students must have strength in their arms in order to control the clay on the wheel in this class!

Fall Break Art Kids Camp

Come have fun and explore mixed media art with Cameron  in this 2 day art camp!  Students will doodle, sketch, paint, layer, glue and have fun as they create unique pieces of art! Kids will take a break mid-day to eat lunch and relax.  After lunch, students return to class for creative free time, and a PG rated movie.  We will provide popcorn for the movie – please notify staff if your child has any allergies!  Spaces fill fast - register in advance to reserve your space!

Favorite Faces Gallery: Drawing & Painting People and Critters Kids Love

Kids get to draw and paint portraits of the people and critters that are central to their lives, including themselves. Silly, serious and/or full of make believe portraits tell stories about both the subject and the artist. Students learn about adding supporting elements to art that help reveal the true nature of the subject. Kids will work with dry media as well as acrylics on canvas board. Printed, student-supplied photo reference of subject matter is required.

Painting for Kids

Anyone can learn to paint! This class encourages students to explore the medium of painting through a variety of techniques emphasizing concepts of shape, volume, and color. With subject matter varying from representational to free form, this class is designed to encourage confidence and creative expression through paint.

Thankful Friends: Friendship Bracelet Workshop for Kids

We are so thankful for our friends!  Kids get creative with beads and string to make bracelets for their friends or family.  Anna will show different methods of beading and braiding string so kids can make multiple bracelets during the workshop.

Kids Printmaking Workshop

Students will learn the art of relief printmaking. In this class, students will learn about the basics of planning, carving into foam blocks, and printing a relief piece. Students will look at Picasso, Hans Holbein, Hokusai, Tom Huck and others as they begin to plan their own print. By the end of the class students will have a good understanding of how printmaking works as well as a multi-copy edition of their work.

Polar Bear Stone Carving for Kids

Dive into stone sculpture with Matty as he teaches teens how to design, sculpt, carve, and polish stone.  Each student will receive one small piece of alabaster stone, which is a soft stone perfect for beginners.  He will lead students step-by-step how to carve a successful polar bear sculpture that kids will cherish!  Each student will leave this class with stone carving knowledge, three dimensional sculpting skills, and at least one piece of awesome alabaster stone sculpture.  Matty learned his stone sculpting trade in Italy while training under American artist Glen Ball, and has been working with stone for over 14 years.

Winter Wonderland Clay

Gear up for the holidays as Cameron leads winter holiday themed hand building projects in this class!  Make ornaments, cookie plates, and hot cocoa mugs if time permits!  Students will learn about slab, coil and pinching techniques.  Kids will be able to paint their creations with bright colors!  Pottery can be picked up 7-10 days after class to allow for drying and firing time.
