Family (All ages – parent/child classes)

Family Classes are for students of all ages. Kids, Tweens, Teens and Adults are welcome to participate in these classes. Tots are invited to join with a parent or guardian. These cross-generational classes are a great way to spend quality time with your family or friends. In each class, students work individually as well as collaboratively.

Making Pottery Together: Haunted Houses

Create a haunted house in this class as Cameron leads the students in learning how to turn slabs, pinch pots and coils into a spooky work of art. Add clay details such as ghosts, ghouls, and pumpkins to your haunted house masterpiece! Due to drying and firing times, pottery will be ready to pick up 7-10 days after the class session is finished.

Let’s be honest - no one goes for a trick on Halloween.  They all go for the treat!  Be prepared for the trick-or-treaters with a handmade ceramic candy bowl to hold all of the treats!  Cameron will work with students on the pottery wheel, teaching them how to successfully make a large candy bowl.  Students can add hand built embellishments and paint so that their piece is ready to fire in the kilns.  Due to drying and firing times, pottery will be ready to pick up 7-10 days after the class session is finished.  Please note that children under 7 cannot use a wheel independently as they are not strong enough and must share a wheel with an adult!

Pumpkin Carving Creations

Friday, October 28

Pumpkins/Materials included.


Enjoy time with family and come to class to carve a creative jack-o-lantern.  All basic carving tools will be provided.  We will also provide glitter, paint, stickers, and mixed media supplies if your pumpkin needs some added punch! Students will leave the mess at the Kimball Art Center and will be able to take their pumpkin home to display just in time for Halloween!  Each registered pair gets 2 pumpkins to carve and create!

Clay Sugar Skull Sculptures

Get in the spirit of Dia de los Muertos and learn how to make traditional Mexican style sugar skulls out of clay with your family.  Kristen will show students examples of classic designs to help students carve and add painted detail to their clay mask sculptures.  Kids and adults alike will get creative in designing their sugar skull.  Bring your imagination, we’ll have the tools to help you create! Due to drying and firing times, pottery will be ready to pick up 7-10 days after the class session is finished.

Giving Thanks: Ceramic Sharing Bowls

Spend time with family and create ceramic bowls of all shapes and sizes for the Thanksgiving table.  Kids and adults will have opportunities to experiment with the pottery wheel to learn wheel throwing techniques, as well as learn hand building methods to make bowls or vessels.  Students will glaze successful work.  These bowls will be treasured by loved ones and will make for a unique addition at your dining room table for years to come. Due to drying and firing times, pottery will be ready to pick up 7-10 days after the class session is finished.  Please note that children under 7 cannot use a wheel independently as they are not strong enough and must share a wheel with an adult!

Learn the basics of wheel throwing! Students will learn how to throw on the wheel and will decorate and add glazes to finish their pieces.  A wheel throwing demo will be given and then students will work beside their family member to each create one wheel thrown piece.  Students will add hand built embellishments and paint so that their piece is ready to fire in the kilns.  Due to drying and firing times, pottery will be ready to pick up 7-10 days after the class session is finished.  Please note that children under 7 cannot use a wheel independently as they are not strong enough and must share a wheel with an adult!

Cookie Plates & Cookie Decorating

Come learn how to create a special clay cookie plate that is made for Santa.  While plates dry, students will have the opportunity to decorate sugar cookies as a treat to be eaten after class. This is a great class for siblings, cousins and other family members to take together while parents are out running holiday errands.  Students under 5 need to be accompanied by an adult.  Please be aware the many food items are used in this class. We do our best to accommodate those students with allergies – make sure to notify us beforehand! Due to drying and firing times, pottery will be ready to pick up 7-10 days after the class session is finished.

Handmade Clay Tree Ornaments

Materials included.


Using air dry clay and clay that can be fired, students will learn how to create keepsake ornaments using slab, coil and pinching techniques.  We will also have cookie cutter stamps to make holiday themed shapes! Students will be able to leave class with the air dry ornaments, however students will need to allow ornaments drying time before they place them on the tree or to decorate at home. The other clay ornaments will dry and be placed in the kiln, ready to be picked up in 7-10 days after class.

Winter Animal Habitats in Clay

Some animals love the cold and snow!  Penguins swim in icy water, polar bears climb on glaciers and icebergs, and snow foxes burrow their noses in snow to find food. Families have fun imagining their favorite winter animals, where they live, and creating animals sculptures and animal habitats out of clay using coil, slab, slipping, and scoring techniques!  This class will be a blast! Due to drying and firing times, pottery will be ready to pick up 7-10 days after the class session is finished.
