New York artist Devorah Sperber combines commonplace materials with simple optical devices to investigate the connections between art, perception and technology. Her works address the complex relationship between the way we think we see and the way the brain actually processes images. In this series, Sperber examines famous paintings from art history.

Don't Fence Me In: Contemporary Quilts by Judith Trager

Join the Kimball Art Center and Summit Sotheby’s International Realty for curator Judith Trager’s discussion about the Kimball’s current exhibit, “Don’t Fence Me In,” a collection of quilts created by two Colorado quilters’ groups, The Piecemakers and Quilt Explorations. The 52 quilts in this exhibit explore various themes and take a decidedly modern look at the icons of the West. Carol Watkins’ “Times Past: Rocking Chair,” shows a rocking chair against the backdrop of a vacant house, exploring the issue of abandonment.

Border Crossings and the Art of the de la Torre Brothers

Just as the Rocky Mountains are a Continental Divide, the border between the United States and Mexico is an Inter-Continental Divide. With Einar and Jamex de la Torre’s current show, Inter-Continental Divide, as a backdrop, University of Utah Assistant Art History Professor Elena Shtromberg will discuss “Border Art,” an art category that emerged in the late 1980s.
